1. Fix chiks with a dark fabric lining inside balconies or along open verandahs. You should lower chiks from 10am to 4pm to keep out the strong sun. Cicks will also help keep out the dust.
2. Unless you absolutely need them, turn off incandescent lights. Use compact fluorescent bulbs instead – not only do they produce the same light, they use a fifth of the energy.
3. Avoid heat-generation activities such as cooking, during the hottest part of the day. Remember to keep your exhaust fan in functioning order and use it every time you cook. Reduce the amount of heat generated in your home and you will use less energy to cool it.
4. Humidity makes room air feel warmer, so minimize washing and drying clothes, showering, and cooking during mid-day. If you can’t avoid it, turn on exhaust fans to help extract warm, moist air.
5. Use a judicious mix of desert coolers and air-conditioners to keep your house cool and bills balanced out. But the best for better cooling; you will also end up spending less on the maintenance.
