• Use low-wattage bulbs wherever possible: You can switch to low-wattage bulbs or CFLs to save energy.
• Clean light bulbs to increase light and life: Dirty, greasy, smoky bulbs reduce light output by 10-20 percent. Clean them regularly to enhance their efficiency.
• Light only as much as needed: If you have used task lighting, use only as many bulbs as you need. Remember, three bulbs can do the same job as four if they are positioned correctly.
• Create a hierarchy of color: Paint and decorate your house in light colors. Dark colors absorb light, making the room warmer. Light colors reflect light and so a room with light-colored walls and upholstery will need less artificial lighting.
• Use dimmers: Dimmers work well and save an equal percentage of energy as they are dimmed (when dimmed 15 percent, their energy consumption also reduces by up to 15 percent).
• Assess your lamp shades: Many shades (especially darker ones) absorb light or reflect it in the wrong direction. Visit a good light store for the right advice.
