White shirts

There are a few common mistakes which most of us tend to make while washing out white clothes. The result? The garments end up looking grey, yellowed or simply dull. Here are a few tips to help you:
1. Hot water keeps clothes white. Use the hottest water the fabric can withstand. Do look at the instructions on the garment’s care label.
2. Avoid washing whites with colored clothes.
3. Using too much detergent can lead to unwanted deposits. So rinse your clothes properly.
4. If you get a supply of hard water (you can gauge this if your soap does not lather well and there are white, crusty sediments on your fixtures), its mineral content is likely to settle on the clothes. Use an additive to soften the water. An easy way to add ½ cup of white vinegar to the water used for the last rinse.
5. Chlorine bleach can discolor your whites and weaken their fabric. Try adding 250gm of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide (available at any pharmacy) to your wash. Or add ½ cup lemon juice to the rinse cycle of your washing machine (medium load), or to the last rinse water, if hand washing.
6. For dirty rings around the collars of a shirt, squirt some shampoo onto the area and rub it in with a nail brush before washing. You can also try rubbing baking soda or white chalk.
7. Dry pure cotton whites in the sun – they will acquire a clean shine.
