Oil paints offer better adhesion, so they’re suitable for chalky surfaces. Latex paint too is a good choice since it’s easy to spread and dries quickly. Remember, the more intense the color, the more likely it is to fade. After a few years, vivid blues and deep reds will seem subdued, and become difficult to touch up.
If you’re painting trim, doors, molding or cabinets:
Keep in mind that most bare surfaces, including wood and some metals, need to be primed before you paint them. Glossier paints protect and highlight trim work, cabinetry doors and molding.
If the existing surface has been painted earlier:
If the pervious paint is in good condition, a light sandpapering suffices. In case the surface has been painted with more than four coats of oil paint, application of a water-based paint may cause the oil paint to pull away and crack. So either go in for an oil-based paint, or get the old paint sandpapered away completely.
If the surface is stained:
Try to lighten the stain as much as possible by getting the surface sandpapered. Avoid water-based paints since they might “re-wet” the stain and allow it to “bleed” through. Prime and paint the walls, but apply at least two to three layers of paint to make sure the stains are thoroughly covered.

Did you know that the brown bread you buy every morning is probably not whole-wheat at all? That it may be a caramelized sugar trick? Wake up… And if you’re up to it, use this recipe to fill your home with the smells of freshly baked bread.
Dissolve about 10gm of dry yeast and 2 tablespoons of sugar in 500m lukewarm water; keep in a dark, warm place till it bubbles. To 750gm of atta add a2tbsp of sugar. Knead with the yeast water till the dough (slightly wetter than roti dough) leaves the surface. Cover with a moist cloth; keep in a dark, warm place. When the dough starts rising, mix it a few times using a wet spoon. Keep aside (2 hours) till it doubles in volume.
Mix 100gm oat flakes, 100gm pre-soaked dalai, 25-30gm of flax seeds and 10-15 ml oil. On a flat, floured surface, knock down the dough and knead softly. Roll till soft and elastic. Flatten and fold over one third from left over the middle and from right. Roll and shape it (high at the middle, tapering at ends). Place in a greased tin, cover with a damp cloth. Let it rise till it double. Remove cloth. Sprinkle til and khuskhus make a lengthwise cut down the middle. Bake in a preheated oven at 160°C and 25-30 minutes. At first, use only the lower heating filament; after 10-15 minutes switch on to the top filament. Allow the surface to turn brown and crusty. Remove from oven and allow it to cool.

This meal-in-a-bowl is brimming with fill-you-up soluble fiber, thanks to the masoor dal. Translation: It may help keep weight down and also help lower total and “bad” LDL cholesterol. The dal, palak and tomatoes, all rich in potassium, work to keep blood pressure in check as well.
Total time: 30 minutes
Makes: 4 main-dish servings
1tbsp olive oil; 4 medium carrots, chopped; 1 small onion, chopped; 1tsp ground jeera; 1½ cup diced tomatoes; 1½ cup vegetable broth (or 1 stock cube dissolved in 1½ cup water); 1 cup laal masoor; ½ cup (packed) baby palak.
1. In a non stick saucepan, heat oil on medium until hot. Add carrots and onion, cook 6-8 minutes or until lightly browned and fork-tender. Stir in jeera; cook for 1 minute.
2. Add tomatoes, broth, masoor, 2 cups water, ½ tsp salt and ½ tsp ground black pepper; cover and heat to boiling on high. Reduce heat to low and simmer, covered, 8 to 10 minutes or until the dal is tender. Stir in palak. Makes about 7½ cups.
